Leukerbad is mentioned for the first time in historical records under the name of "Boez" in 1229. With the growth of goods and passenger traffic in the Middle Ages the trade route linking the cantons of Berne and Valais over today's Gemmi becomes increasingly popular. There are good grounds for assuming that the name "Gemmi" originated from the French word for a road or trail - "chemin".
Right up to today, many famous visitors have come to the Alpine spa village - including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Guy de Maupassant, Mark Twain and Pablo Picasso.
Alpine farming still takes place today from around the end of June to mid-September on the mountain pastures surrounding Leukerbad. Alpine parades, mountain festivals and cheese-making for everyone to see are just some of the traditions that have been preserved up to the present day.
The friendly village in the sunny Valais with its clean and crisp air is a place for family, sports and wellness holidays, in short a place for everybody any time of year.
